I Choose Community- Olmstead v. L.C. Sweatshirt

Choice is essential and so isn't community integration if the situation warrants.  In 1999, 2 women (Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson) fought to be integrated into their community after voluntarily placing themselves into a state run hospital. They were cleared for reintegration into their communities, which they preferred, but were forced to continue to live in the hospital setting for years due to the state of Georgia not having community-based programs.

They won the Supreme Court's landmark ruling of this extremely important fight for their rights when they sued under Title II of the ADA in which they were being discriminated against and were not given community-based programs. Please read the case here to understand the importance of their advocacy and how it has affected the disability community.
